Meet the 2026 Department of Psychology St. George EDI Student Award Winners

"My contribution to EDI in the Psychology Department has centered on expanding access to psychological science and creating opportunities for students who may not otherwise see themselves represented in the field. In 2021, I co-founded the annual Summer Psychology Research Initiative (SPRINT), a volunteer-led program that has since provided over 300 high school students—particularly those from historically underrepresented backgrounds, including Indigenous, Black, and racialized students, first-generation students, disabled students, and gender-diverse youth—with hands-on exposure to psychological science and research. I have also served as a lead co-coordinator of the Tri-Campus Psychology EDI Group, bringing together faculty, staff, and students to advise on departmental EDI priorities, and delivered various presentations on departmental EDI initiatives at graduate recruitment and orientation events. EDI is important to me because I believe academia is more than conducting research; it is also about mentoring the next generation of scholars and making science accessible to those who might not otherwise see themselves in it."

The Department of Psychology St. George EDI Student Awards recognize undergraduate and graduate students at the St. George campus whose contributions to the department reflect a strong commitment to promoting fairness, recognition, and the full participation of all members of our diverse community.

SPRINT awarded the Access Programs University Fund (APUF) to expand to the Scarborough campus!

The Summer Psychology Research Initiative (SPRINT) was one of 8 university initiatives that were generously awarded the APUF grant to expand its programming from the St.George campus to the Scarborough campus.

SPRINT first received $73,000 in APUF funding for 2024-2026 & we are grateful to be funded for 2026-2027!

SPRINT hits new heights breaking down barriers in science (2025)

The Summer Psychology Research Initiative (SPRINT) — an outreach and access program established five years ago by graduate students in the Department of Psychology — celebrated its biggest year yet this summer at the University of Toronto.

Out of a record 662 applications from students at 178 different high schools in Ontario, 60 students were invited to participate in the free two-week program designed to advance equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in psychology and post-secondary education. Read more here!
